SECOND CHANCE

.....Get up and try again

Among the many, many virtues of God, is his desire to give us a second chance, or as many as we need. God wants us to succeed. He takes pleasure in our success. He knows that we, as human beings, that there will be many pit falls and failures along the way. He is patient and understanding. He will give each of us those second chances to realize our goal whenever we feel able to try again. Sometimes, we need to have the courage to try again. Having experienced before rejection and failure, can be a stumbling block to again rise and try again.

Fortunate are we when that second chance does come again, by the mercy of God and man alike. Some would need a second chance to try to save their marriage, or to do a better job of raising the children. Due to our youth, lack of knowledge or just plain being selfish and stubborn, wrong decisions were made. We did not realize the pain we caused or the penalty we had to endure. Having a second chance is our way of making amends and to again reach out with a new start and vision. The key, though, is to not again make the same mistake as before.

Perhaps, in our second chance, we would have chosen a different vocation, moved to another city or avoided that sin that nearly destroyed our life. So many things could have been different today if we had made a different choice then.

Moses wanted to serve God, but ended up committing a murder in the process. His penalty was to serve 40 years as a shepherd. But, God saw something in Moses and waited until the right time to give him his second chance. Moses, then, served God like no one had ever done before.

When the Israelites departed from Egypt on their way to the Promised Land, they had the chance to enter into the land of milk and honey in two weeks, but they failed. God again was patient, and after 40 years, and under new leadership, they had their second chance. With it the course of history was changed.

Of all the great men and women of the Bible, perhaps, Paul stands out as the most successful person to succeed after being given the second chance. Before, he thought serving God was to capture and persecute the Christians. God opened his eyes to the truth and Paul became the great evangelist of his time. Christians are forever indebted to Paul because God gave him a second chance to do the right thing according to God’s plan.

There are many heroes in the Bible who are known today, such as Jonah, Samson, David, Esther and Peter because God in his mercy gave them their second chance to serve him.

However, we need not restrict ourselves to Biblical heroes of old who recovered from their early failures. There are plenty of modern day heroes in every walk of life, who have made their mark on society. They had the courage, the determination, and the fortitude to rise again. It is not how many times we have been knocked down that matter, but how many times we rose to fight again. "For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again." Pro 24:16

In the course of many wars, the United States suffered many defeats, in the War for our Independence, in the Civil War and in the World Wars. We did not surrender. Victory was ours, but only after we made that next attempt.

We, too, should understand that God is not finished with us. If at first we don’t succeed, try again. Many of the success stories of today are as the result of men and women rising from the depths of defeat to a glorious height, and they did so only by getting up and accepting that second chance. God is rooting for us.
