COULD JESUS SIN HERE ON EARTH?

By Dr. Peter Vourliotis

I was asked this question recently, "Could Jesus sin while on earth?" I am very happy to answer it.

The proper question asked, instead, should have been, "Could temptation overcome or even touch Jesus while on earth?" I much appreciate the opportunity to comment on the word, "aperastos" (Greek phonetic) or "cannot be tempted." (James 1:13)

Although, someone may say that the verse in James is referring to God and not specifically to Jesus, it can be applied to Jesus as well. However, I would like to answer the question from another angle.

Scripture teaches that Jesus was sinless in His earthly life, having been conceived without sin and through the power of the Holy Spirit. We read this in Hebrews 4:14-15. Jesus, Himself, talked about being without sin in John 8:46. Paul, on the other hand, dealing with the same subject, dares to go even farther and says in Romans 8:3, that not only God sent His Son, "in the likeness of sinful flesh," but that "He condemned sin in the flesh."

Of course, Jesus was like us in the limitations of His flesh. He had to eat, drink, become tired, feel physical pain, be exposed to ill treatment, suffer agony in the Garden and then die of exhaustion on the cross. Jesus also experienced the limitations of the flesh having been "born of a woman" and "under the law," (Gal 4:4), working as a carpenter, (Mark 6:3), and having been limited in knowledge by His humanity, (Luke 2:52). However, Jesus was unlike any one of us the fact being that He was sinless and that sin had no power over him. Furthermore, and this is the important point of our study, that Jesus came to condemn sin and is, also, now able to deliver us from sin.

Jesus, not only could He be accused of sin, but in every point of His life, He was united with God the Father in doing His will. He came to minister and not to be ministered to and to give His life as a ransom for many. His life was known for His holy love, His free obedience to God and the complete surrender of His will to the Father.

Thus, the only course of action available to us is not to question His sinlessness, but to either believe in Him or reject Him. I hope and pray you will choose to believe in Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.

I hope these comments have been helpful. May the Lord bless you in your study of His Holy Word that is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes.
